About Fillmore, CA

Located in the heart of the Santa Clara River Valley is Fillmore, a city that is rich in agriculture and history. Fillmore’s historic downtown was established in 1887 by Southern Pacific when they ran railroad through the area. Southern Pacific also provided the name for the town after J.A. Fillmore, who was the general superintendent for the Pacific.

Located at the foot of the Topatopa Mountains in the Los Padres National Forest, Fillmore residents are able to enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds the city as well as its Mediterranean-like climate. The many orange groves at the city’s borders have made the city a popular tourist destination over the years. Families with children in public school are part of the Fillmore Unified School District. The District includes two high schools, one middle school, and four elementary schools.

Fillmore’s historic downtown buildings and houses are centered around Central Street, and are a popular filming location for television and movies. In 2007, an episode of CSI entitled “Leaving Las Vegas” featured old-town Fillmore. The city was also used for the television series Jericho and Big Love. The Santa Clara River Valley Railroad Historical Society operates the Railroad Visitor Center, which displays photographs, historical items, a fully operational 90-foot train turntable, and several restored railroad cars. Just a short distance from the Railroad Visitor Center is the Fillmore Historical Museum. The museum features historical items from the city’s history, including the restored Southern Pacific Railroad Fillmore 1887 standard-design One Story Combination Depot No. 11, which was built in 1887. The museum has many exhibitions that illustrate Fillmore’s history, as well as the nearby communities of Bardsdale and Piru.

While you’re out enjoying the history of Fillmore, don’t forget to take a moment and stop in one of the town’s many local businesses. Bennett’s Honey Farm is one of the many interesting places that you and your family will want to visit. Founded by Red Bennett, a former NASA engineer, and his wife Anne forty years ago, the farm and brand are now owned and maintained by long-time customer and dedicated bee keeper Chip Vannoy and his wife, Taydee. The farm has been run 100% by solar power since 2005, and is working towards a zero carbon footprint operation.
